Business groups, govt vow cooperation in P260M reclamation project
BORACAY ISLAND- Both the Aklan provincial government and the Boracay Foundation Incorporated (BFI) vowed cooperation to settle concerns raised over the implementation of the P260 million reclamation project at the Caticlan Jetty Port in Malay, Aklan.
Earlier, the BFI has filed a complaint at the Department of Interior and Local Government over the planned project, saying that they were not consulted in the process of seeking legal permits over the project considered by the province as their economic pump priming activity.
Niven Maquirang, Caticlan Jetty Port administrator, said that the Aklan provincial government is bent on pursuing the project but also welcomes recommendations coming from the business sector of this resort island.
The vow for cooperation developed during the face off of both the BFI, the Malay local government and Aklan provincial government representatives during the recent Sangguniang Panlalawigan session in Kalibo.
“The allocation for the Marina project came from a bond flotation scheme approved by the Local Government Unit Guaranteed Corporation (LGUGC).
Also, the Environment Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Philippine Reclamation Authority have also provided clearance for the project to push through,” said Maquirang.
For their part, Loubelle Cann who is the BFI president, said that they wanted to call the Aklan provincial government and other agencies to conduct intensive environmental impact to determine the proposed Marina project as environmentally safe.
“We are not against development projects but we just wanted to be sure that the proposed project benefit all sectors,” said Cann.
The Malay municipal council has also already submitted two resolutions rejecting the proposed government project to be established in their own turf.
“Instead of creating a new establishment in Caticlan, the Aklan provincial government should just strengthen the existing Caticlan Jetty Port being managed by the province,” said newly-elected vice mayor Ciceron Cawaling.
