KALIBO, Aklan – A young swimmers’ organization here eyes to get a representation for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games as they prepare for the National Championship in Biñan, Laguna, July 22–25.
The Aklan Aquablades will send three swimmers for the annual long-course national championships after being approved qualified by the Philippine Aquatic Sports Association (PASA), said a source who requested not to be named for lack of authority to speak for the group.
“We are supposedly sending four swimmers but one of them failed to meet the required swimming time… PASA is very strict to its rules and we have to respect that,” the source said.
The young Aklan swimmers who will be sent are Ella Ibaretta for the butterfly category, Chinny Respicio for breaststroke and Ada Ortega for backstroke.
Their coach will be American Thomas Davis, who has trained young swimmers for 30 years.
The young swimmers already aced several swimming tournaments.
Recently, they won in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet.
Some of them already received invitations to join swimming clubs in Iloilo.
Participating swimmers will compete against the members of the Philippine swimming team.
Winners in the national stint will get the chance to represent the country in international competitions.
Meanwhile, the venue in Laguna has been the official training site in the country for swimmers who will join the SEA Games.
The Aklan Aquablades is the only swimming organization in the province registered with PASA.

Suspended veteran Air21 guard Wynne Arboleda has a good chance of making a comeback sooner than expected in the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Cup.

But the stocky point guard will still have to comply with the requirements requested by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios.

“Wynne still has to submit documentations we asked from him. Once submitted, we will evaluate said documents and deliberate on his appeal,” Barriols told GMANews.TV in a text message.

But Air21 team manager Lito Alvarez believes that Arboleda’s recent involvement in one of the PBA’s community project is an indication that he will be reinstated soon. Barrios reportedly delegated Arboleda for a community service initiated by the league.

“I expect him to be back in the coming days. In fact, commissioner Barrios even assigned Wynne in a community service last Sunday,” Alvarez said in a telephone interview.

Alvarez, who helped Joey Lina’s gubernatorial bid in Laguna province, added that the Office of the Commissioner asked Arboleda to submit a certificate of his involvement in the league’s community service.

Arboleda was given a season-long ban by the PBA after attacking a paying fan, who even filed charges against the burly quarterback.

The Express hinted of Arboleda’s comeback when they put him in their active roster and the pride of Kalibo, Aklan getting overwhelming response when he started a signature campaign.

The absence of Arboleda had certainly hurt the Express’ campaign this season. In the Philippine Cup, the Express failed to advance past the elimination round and continue to struggle in the ongoing Fiesta Cup where the team languished at the bottom of the standings with a 1-8 win-loss card. – JVP/Rey Joble, GMANews.TV

KALIBO, Aklan- Senator Lito Lapid is planning to lobby for the inclusion of the Arnis, the country’s national sports, to the 2011 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Indonesia next year.
Lapid, an advocate of the said traditional sports, eventually pushed for the approval of Arnis as the country’s national sports.
The Department of Education (DepEd) early this week announced that the Arnis sports for the first time was included in the Palarong Pambansa which is now going on in the province of Tarlac.
“I also hope to bring the arnis to the SEA games,” Lapid said.
The Arnis was declared as a national sports on December 11, 2009.
Lapid was in Kalibo recently for the opening of the National Inter-Provincial Chess Championship organized by the National Chess Federations of the Philippines in cooperation with the Aklan provincial government.

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan– A team of Aetas has backed out from the 4th International Dragon Boat Festival slated April 22-24 in this resort island.
Bembol Magapan Team Ati Bugsay said they decided not to join this year’s competition after they were “duped” by their handler last year.
They demanded that they be given their share of their commission last year and exposure in Metro Manila.
Magapan noted that they have been joining the yearly festival since 2002. Last year, their team composed of 22 Aetas won fourth in the 300-meter open category for men.
Sis. Victoria Ustan of the Missionary of Charity, the group that is looking after the Aeta community, proposed that they forge a contract with the supposed handler to avoid similar problem in the future.
The competition will be participated in by dragon boat paddlers from Australia, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, United States, and the Philippines.
It is being supported by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the local government unit of Malay.
