KALIBO, Aklan – The Office of the President has issued a stay order in favor of the suspended Banga Mayor Antonio Mameng.

The Malacanang order, which was issued early this week ordered Mameng’s return to his office as town mayor.

The order will be implemented by the Department of Interior and Local Government thorugh its regional legal officer, Atty. Ferdinand Panes.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) earlier meted out a three-month suspension against Mameng. It was signed by Gov. Carlito Marquez in October.

Mameng, however, refused to recognize the order. He vowed to haul the august body to court to secure a temporary restraining order.

His was an offshoot of the accusation hurled by Banga councilor Vicente Seraspi against him.

Seraspi alleged that the mayor committed irregularities in the construction of the P4 million municipal dome at the municipal plaza.

He claimed that the dome is illegal because the municipality through its municipal engineer failed to secure a building permit prior to the project’s construction.

But Mameng denied the accusation.

Funding for the project came from the countrywide development funds of various senators and Department of Public Works and Highways which he solicited.

However, Mameng denied the accusation that he committed wrongdoings. (By ERNAN BALDOMERO)
