Suspect in media man’s death files COC for mayor
KALIBO, Aklan – Former Lezo Mayor Fred Arcenio, who is facing murder charges before the Cebu City Regional Trial Court for killing Bombo Radyo’s station manager in 2004, filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for mayor of the town.
Arcenio’s brother, Nonoy, who is the village chief of Poblacion, Lezo, told Panay News that Arcenio filed his COC at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office there on November 30.
Arcenio, who is running as an independent candidate, also fielded a complete slate composed of a lawyer, a businessman, and other political personalities in Lezo.
Among his supporters is Vice Mayor Philip Buenaflor.
Nonoy said Arcenio made the decision after consulting with his family, friends and supporters.
Last October, Arcenio visited Lezo after the Regional Trial Court in Cebu gave him 24 hours to register at the Comelec office.
Reports had it that town employees voluntarily contributed money to finance Arcenio’s travel expenses.
His wife, Jean, said they hope that Arcenio would win against Mayor Victor Fernandez.
Arcenio was a former agent of the Military Intelligence Group. He is the prime suspect in the death of a media man. He surrendered after two years in hiding and continuously deny any involvement in the said killing./
