MANILA, Philippines – Reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF)/International Boxing Organization (IBO) flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. confirmed Friday that he will be moving up to the superflyweight division this year.
In a press conference held in Kalibo, Aklan, Donaire said that he is already tired staying in the flyweight division and competing in the superflyweight division is a new challenge for him.
Donaire was in Kalibo Friday to personally accept the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s resolution making him an adopted son of Aklan. The SP decided confer the resolution since Donaire’s wife, Rachel, who is also a national taekwondo champion, traces her roots in the province.
“Although I wanted to personally challenge junior bantamweight champion Jose “Carita” Lopez of Puerto Rico but if the bout will not materialize, I might go up to challenge (World Boxing Organization) superflyweight champion Fernando Montiel,” said Donaire.
Donaire arrived in the province from Cebu City and landed at the Caticlan Airport in Malay then proceeded for an hour drive to Kalibo. He first met with Gov. Carlito Marquez for a courtesy call. – GMANews.TV
