KALIBO, Aklan – Chess Grandmaster Eugene Torre is scheduled to visit Aklan province Saturday and will pay a courtesy call to Gov. Carlito Marquez.
Marquez said he will be discussing with Torre the possibility of training young chess enthusiasts in the province, hoping that they would reach international level in the future.
Torre is Asia’s first Grandmaster who qualified for the Candidates for the 1984 World Championship. He is still one of the country’s strongest chess players.
Aklan has several international chess players and one of them is college student Mira Mirano of Banga.
Mirano competed in the 2009 Singapore International Chess Festival. She also has captured the bronze in the 10th Asean Age-Group Championships for Standard Chess Girls 12-under in Thua Thien, Hue, Vietnam last June 6 to 15, 2009.
Mirano is currently a varsity chess player of the Far Eastern University (FEU) in Metro Manila.
